But I recently looked again and found with a shock that in one of my favorite texts, one of my favorite authors (or so I thought) recommends misusing (female) listeners as straw dummies, talking to whom one is able to formulate sentences that help one understand what one is trying to think.[1]

„I interpose inarticulate sounds, draw out the connecting words, possibly even use an apposition when required and employ other tricks which will prolong my speech in order to gain sufficient time for the fabrication of my idea in the workshop of reason. During this process nothing is more helpful to me than a sudden movement on my sister’s part, as if she were about to interrupt me; for my mind, already tense, becomes even more excited by this attempt to deprive it of the speech of which it enjoys the possession“[2]

It would be hard to find a more vivid description of a speaker-oriented view of speech, and that obstinate kind of talent egged on by being pressured or approached, a mind that only thinks when it feels like a wild animal in a corner. I guess I do can relate to that. It also reminds me of the band practices with my sister. We can never remember what we did, so we have started running a recording. Afterward, I listen to our voices cutting each other off, missing the point, all the fails that intersubjectively distrustful people tend to commit. Is it because we are immigrants, because we grew up in Hietzing, because we are girls and loners, accustomed always to have to build the space we need to stand, not expecting to be understood, or for our words ever to fall on sympathetic ground? Hypotheses; fact is, when together, we cut each other off protectively, like frenzied harpoonists impatient to get to the point, while Mario the guitarist looks on in amazement.

Perhaps Kleist’s frank avowal of his bad behaviour as a conversationalist tweaks a familial nerve, but his frankness remains a treasure. Rarely do Western authors avow such a state, as a rule one reads accounts of conscientious and systematic deliberation. That explains why Kleist gets so many points from the likes of myself. But who is the speaker? Kleist is a unique author also because of his skeptical precision. Later in the text he provides background in an observation that questions the basic terms of Descartes‘ well-known premise: „it is not we who know, but at first it is only a certain state of mind of ours that knows.“[3] In this way, Kleist formulated the human mind as a Turing machine before the invention of the latter. Such radical skepticism is symptomatic for the precision of his perceptions and the way in which he acknowledges – and enjoys it – the banal and material origins of what eventually flows down the river of idealist narrative, receiving the chemical waste from all the weapons and parts production.

Tawada Yoko is also a fan of Kleist. This is the only time I know of Tawada’s anger flaring up. Though she gets the most inane questions continually about her own writing.

What about Kleist’s sister? Before her brother committed suicide, he wrote her a separate letter thanking her for her kindness and assuring her that it was impossible to help him on this earth.
