Foreword:
\nAll poems in this collection are found poems and all visual art is found art. They are assembled out of text and images printed in \u201cVenac\u201d, a Yugoslav literary magazine for pupils, students and youth. \u201cVenac\u201d had a long history. The first edition was likely published in the mid-20s when Yugoslavia wasn\u2019t yet a socialist federation but a kingdom. Throughout the following sixty years, \u201cVenac\u201d continued to collect and publish poems, prose, literary essays, criticism and an occasional drawing, painting or photograph, all submitted by the Yugoslav youth. Persisting through several decades of turbulent history, \u201cVenac\u201d became a valuable artefact of the past \u2013 printed in thousands, the magazine was distributed across all federative republics, spanning languages and local dialects. \u201cVenac\u201d was widely read. At times, its pages advertised socialist propaganda and contributed to the personality cult surrounding Josip Broz Tito. At times, perhaps predicting the post-Yugoslav national(ist) revival, \u201cVenac\u201d called for poetry that proved its love for the fatherland and willingness to fight. Mostly, however, it asked for a mutual reading \u2013 from confessional love poems to experiments in form, from travelogues to mundane realism, \u201cVenac\u201d gave space to its young readers and published works in Serbo-Croatian\/Croatio-Serbian, Slovenian, Macedonian and Albanian. Like its country, \u201cVenac\u201d wasn\u2019t perfect. But, like Yugoslavia, (and somewhat miraculously) it did work. Today, most of \u201cVenac\u201d has vanished into thin air. This is not unusual, considering the great efforts each of the former republics took to eradicate all traces of their socialist past. In only a few years, the ideals of brotherhood and unity were lost to genocide, war crimes and mass-scale ethnic cleansing. Books were burned, histories rewritten, and new languages emerged, now prescribed by governments to maximise their difference from those that surround them. Yugoslav memorabilia was packed into basements and attics, far from the all-seeing eye of its new nations. When asked, old photographs of my mother in a pioneer uniform were retrieved from the locked-up door of a heavy oak closet:<\/p>\n

It was also in my grandma\u2019s house that I recently discovered \u201cVenac\u201d. Eight, well-preserved editions were shelved under a dusty hardcover of \u201cWar and Peace\u201d.<\/p>\n

These eight \u201cVenac\u201d, published in the seventies, were read by my mother and aunt. One of them, or perhaps both, left pale pencil marks on analyses of required readings. They highlighted (and sometimes cut) individual lines of poetry and tracked exam schedules in the lower corners of the emptier pages. Often, they circled books they wanted and favoured foreign writers over local ones.<\/p>\n

In one \u201cVenac\u201d, among its yellow, soft pages, I found a long-forgotten postcard sending \u201csalty kisses\u201d to my mother. \u201cVenac\u201d lived in my family, and I began to believe that \u2013 by getting closer to its faded words \u2013 I might begin to understand Yugoslavia. To me, Yugoslavia represents the abruptly (and violently) ended youth of my parents. With permission from my grandmother, I took her eight \u201cVenac\u201d magazines to Berlin. The first poem I collaged from them was \u201calka\u201d, now published in SAND Journal, issue 25. Composing \u201calka\u201d took one afternoon and no rewriting. The other poems and visual art followed and, by now, I’ve devised a process of finding and keeping track of wanted lines, sentences and titles. \u201cVenac\u201d became \u201cVENAC\u201d \u2013 a collage, a fragment, and a hint of what the world used to be. \u201cVENAC\u201d is Yugoslavia seen through the eyes of a Bosnian poet. \u201cVENAC\u201d is my family, cut in time and reassembled.<\/p>\n
