(†) Giwi Margwelaschwili

Giwi Margwelaschwili was born on 14.12.1927 in Berlin as the son of Georgian emigrants. He was stationed in Tiblisi on 13.03.2020.

His mother Mariam chose suicide in June 1933 because she could not cope with life in emigration. His father, the Georgian scientist and exile politician Titus von Margwelaschwili, taught philosophy and oriental studies. In 1946 he and his son were kidnapped by the Soviet secret service NKVD. The father was murdered, Giwi Margwelaschwili was interned in Sachsenhausen. There he taught German. After 18 months Giwi Margwelaschwili was released. However, he was no longer allowed to go to the western sector of Berlin, but was resettled in Georgia and accommodated with relatives completely unknown to him. Only in 1987 he was able to leave for Germany. German was his first language and he hardly understood Georgian. He was accompanied by an immense number of novels and stories written in German during his emigration. He lived in Berlin until 2011, since then in Tbilisi.

In 1994 he received German citizenship and an honorary scholarship from the German President. In 1995 he received the “Brandenburg Literature Prize of Honour” for his complete works, in 2006 the Goethe Medal, in 2008 the Federal Cross of Merit. In 2013 he received the Italo-Svevo-Prize for his complete works. He was a member of the P.E.N. His works include “Muzal – a Georgian novel”, “Das böse Kapitel”, “Kapitän Wakusch”, “Der ungeworfene Handschuh”and others. Since 2007 an exhibition of Giwi Margwelaschwilis works has been published by Verbrecher Verlag.

In 2014 a compilation of texts from “Leben im Ontotext” and “Der ungeworfene Handschuh” as well as unpublished texts was published by Verbrecherverlag under the title “Das Leseleben”.
