Assaf Alassaf was born in 1976 in Deir ez-Zor, Syria and studied dentistry in Damascus, where he worked primarily as a dentist but also started writing for newspapers. Since 2007, he has published numerous articles in Arabic newspapers such as Al Hayat and Al Mustakbal. In 2013 he left Damascus for Nouakchott, Mauritania; he lived and worked as a dentist in Beirut from the beginning of 2014 until the fall of 2015, when he moved to his current home, Berlin. His debut “Abu Jürgen: Mein Leben mit dem deutschen Botschafter” (my life with the German ambassador) appeared in 2015 as an e-book and was printed in 2016. In January 2016 he received the Weiße-Meer-Fellowship for threatened authors and artists from the Mediterranian for a residency at the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin, and in early 2016 a fellowship at Akademie Schloss Solitude.
