Menekşe Toprak is a Turkish author, translator and radio journalist. She resides in Istanbul and Berlin. Toprak writes short stories and novels. Her collections of short stories”Valizdeki Mektup” (The Letter in the Suitcase), “Hangi Dildedir Aşk” (What is the Language of Love) and her debut novel “Temmuz Çocukları” (July Children), were published in 2007, 2009, and 2011 respectively. Her latest novel “Ağıtın Sonu” (The End of the Lament) was published in 2014. She has translated the works of Arseny Tarkovsky, Zafer Şenocak, Ralf Thenior and Akif Pirinçci into Turkish. She compiled an anthology for the Suhrkamp publishing house in German titled “Türkische Erzählungen des 20. Jahrhundert” (Turkish short stories of the 20th century, 2008) and her short story “Valizdeki Mektup” was published in freitextmagazin as “Der Brief im Koffer”. Her stories have also been translated into English and French, her debut novel was released in Italian in 2015. The story “Valizdeki Mektup”, has been published in The Massachusetts Review under the title of “The Letter in the Suitcase,” translated and introduced by Prof. Yasemin Yildiz (University of California, LA.). Her novel “Ağıtın Sonu” was awarded the Duygu Asena novel award in 2015. The novel has recently been translated into German by Sabine Adatepe under the title “Die Geschichte von der Frau, den Männern und den verlorenen Märchen”. It will be published by Orlanda Verlag in Berlin, October 2017.
