175 years ago, master brewer Joseph Pfeffer founded his brewery on the site of the present Pfefferberg. Since then beer has been brewed here, chocolate manufactured and bread baked. In the second world war the cellar was an air-raid shelter, and during the times of the GDR the Neues Deutschland newspaper was printed here. Thanks to the Pfefferberg association for the funding of city culture, founded in 1990, the Pfefferberg has become a popular cultural venue after the reunification of Germany. Ever since, galleries and artists have called it their home, projects for young people are realized and numerous cultural events are taking place here.
