“Arriving at each new city, the traveller finds again a past of his that he did not know he had: the foreignness of what you no longer are or no longer possess lies in wait for you in foreign, unpossessed places.”
Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities

Once again we celebrate the multiplicity of this city. That strange mix of the foreign and the familiar. Unlike Marco Polo in Calvino’s aforementioned novel it isn’t invisible cities that we seek. But rather the invisible languages in Berlin. We strive to make visible what isn’t.

So, once again we’ve gathered fictional tales of smoke. Of shadows, of things unspoken. A kaleidoscope of memory, dreams and thoughts. We laid perched at the door frames of Berlin’s best and finest international authors, hunting for glimmer, collecting flakes of light.

We write (and read) so that we may rediscover dreams and other blooming things through the gaze of language. Or rather, as Sharon Dodua Otoo mantains in her opening speech to the STADTSPRACHEN festival 2016:
