He first rose to critical acclaim as a founding member of the indie rock-band <em>Silver Jews<\/em>. The band actively toured and recorded albums between 1989 and 2009, when Berman chose to discontinue the project. During those 20 years, Berman was the only constant member of the band. In 1999, he published his first and only poetry collection, titled <em>Actual Air<\/em>. The book was the first to be published by <em>Open City Books<\/em>. His most recent project consisted of the Americana band Purple Mountains. In 2019, they published their eponymous release album, which remained the only one to be produced by the band. The album received favourable reviews from many critics, who notably praised its lyrics, written by Berman.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, Berman was known for his lyrical and literary talents, which he channelled into the lyrics of his songs and his poems.
