Lemke studied Oriental Philology and Islamic Studies at the Ruhr University in Bochum and the Ain Shams University in Cairo. He has been interpreting and translating from Hebrew and Arabic since 1995. Lemke has translated historical nonfiction by Daniel Blatman, Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi, Shlomo Sand, and Idith Zertal, including Tom Segev&#8217;s biography of Simon Wiesenthal. He translated epic literature by Leah Aini, Yossi Avni, Alon Hilu, Yoram Kaniuk, Dov Kimchi, Chaim Lapid, Dror Mishani, Eshkol Nevo and Joshua Sobol. Blatman&#8217;s book on the death marches of concentration camp prisoners in the final phase of Nazism was presented by him in 2013 in the Federal Republic itself. In 2000 and again in 2004, Lemke received the Hamburg Prize for Literary Translation, and in 2021 he was awarded the German-Hebrew Translator&#8217;s Prize for his translation of the novel &#8220;\u00dcber Uns&#8221; by Eshkol Nevo.
