Then he worked in the harbour, at the docks. In 1983 he arrived in Berlin with a DAAD scholarship and studied with the philosopher Michael Theunissen at Freie Universit\u00e4t for three years. 1988-89 he lived in East-Berlin and worked at the Berliner Ensemble, mainly with Heiner M\u00fcller productions such as <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Germania Tod in Berlin<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> (B.E.) and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>The Commission<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"> (Rostock). 1990 \u2013 1996 he directed six plays for the theatre company <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Die Phrasenm\u00e4her<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, including the now famous cabar\u00e9-actor\/director Frank L\u00fcdecke (<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Die Stachelschweine<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">). <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">From the age of 18 Hallberg wrote plays and adaptions (Hesse, Wilde, Blixen, Moli\u00e8re etc) for the theatre Ordalek\/Wordplay in Sweden. Hallberg\u2019s literary debut, the essay-novel <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>The Flaneur<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><sub><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u2019 <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sub><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>s Gaze <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">(1993; <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Der Blick des Flaneurs<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, 1995) took the image of the fla<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u0302<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">neur into the present. Other novels are <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Grand Tour<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>The Stolen Football<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Legends &#038; Lies. Italian Stories, European Trash<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">, and <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Strindberg<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><sub><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u2019<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/sub><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>s Shadow in the Paris of the North<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">. Hallberg has translated Shakespeare, Moli\u00e8re and Walter Benjamin \u2013 Schiller, Wedekind, Brecht, Handke, Schwab and several contemporary German and English playwrights. Since 2014 he teaches \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u00c9criture \/ traduction<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #23050a;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u201d 4-6 weeks a year at \u00c8tudes Nordiques, Sorbonne, maintaining a unique collaboration with the cultural organization \u201cEnergheia\u201d in Matera, Italy. In 2018 he was awarded the Kellgren Prize from the Swedish Academy for his literary works. <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">In 2019 he published the novel<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Berlin Transit. The Unfinished<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">(2019), dealing with Berlin experiences in the 1980s from a contemporary perspective, and the play<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>Richard II and the Future<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">(2020). His most recent work (co-edited by John Swedenmark)\u00a0is <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>The Strategies of Solitude. The Fl\u00e2neur, the Collector, Art and the Ideals of Life <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">(2021)<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>. <\/i><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">He is about to finish the English version<\/span><\/span><\/span><i> <\/i><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\">of <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Bookman Old Style, serif;\"><span lang=\"en-US\"><i>The Theatre Castle.
