In his few years of life, he had not only enriched Vietnamese journalism with outstanding literary reportage, but also produced four novels, including “The Great Lot” (S\u1ed1 \u0111\u1ecf). V\u0169 Tr\u1ecdng Ph\u1ee5ng published all four novels between January 1936 and March 1937 – within less than 15 months.<\/p>\n
In the same period, he also wrote at least twelve short stories, as well as the extensive reportage “Hausdiener”, praised by contemporaries as a masterpiece, and translated Victor Hugo’s drama “Lucretia Borgia” into Vietnamese.<\/p>\n
However, not only V\u0169 Tr\u1ecdng Ph\u1ee5ng’s obvious work mania, but also his opium addiction, tuberculosis and lifelong poverty played their part in his early death. Despite his success, he had never managed to leave behind the poverty to which even many successful Vietnamese were condemned in colonial Vietnam.<\/p>\n
V\u0169 Tr\u1ecdng Ph\u1ee5ng was born on 20 October 1912 in Hanoi, the capital of French Indochina, where he spent almost his entire life. Due to his poverty, Vu Trong Phung had to leave school early after only six years.<\/p>\n
He scraped by with odd jobs, wrote short stories on the side and finally became a journalist for the daily newspaper “The New Day” (Nhat Tan) in 1933. In just a short time, he became known nationwide for his reportages dedicated to the poor and marginalised, written in a young new tone. In them, he unsparingly held up a mirror to colonial society.<\/p>\n
He saw himself as a writer of realism and felt close to republicanism, republicanism understood here as rational civic-mindedness oriented towards education, the nation and the rule of law, which does not depend on the integrative powers of the church or the monarchy.<\/p>\n
His influence on modern Vietnamese literature was great, despite his early death. Even the censorship of the Communist Party of Vietnam could not change this, which banned his books for a long time because of their supposed negative pessimism. To this day, Vietnamese authors refer to his work. In the meantime, the work of V\u0169 Tr\u1ecdng Ph\u1ee5ngs has become accessible again and is regularly reprinted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
