Edna Bonhomme is a historian of science, editor, and cultural writer. Edna earned a PhD in the History of Science from Princeton University and a Master of Public Health from Columbia University , as well as a Bachelor’s in Biology from Reed College. One of her tasks is to mine through the archives and complicate our understanding of contagion, epidemics, toxicity, and maladies. Through critical storytelling, Edna narrates how people perceive modern plagues and how they try to escape from them. Her essays have appeared in Al Jazeera, The Guardian, The London Review of Books, The Nation and elsewhere. In addition to her writing, she is an editor for Silver Press, a feminist publisher based in London. She previously had fellowships at the Max Planck Institute for History of Science, the Ludwig Maximilian Universit\u00e4t, the Camargo Foundation, and the University of Oslo. Edna is currently writing her book, Captive Contagions (One Signal\/Simon & Schuster, 2023), which examines the role that confinement has played in fostering and hindering epidemics. This is a narrative-driven historical text that hones in on seven epidemics\u2014from nineteenth-century cholera to twenty-first-century COVID\u2014 to show how people who are made captive on the plantation, the prison, and the factory, become infected but also survive.
