Faruk \u0160ehi\u0107, born in Biha\u0107 (Yugoslavia) in 1970, was twenty-two years old and a student of veterinary medicine in Zagreb when the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina began, ending “the golden age of the South Slavs,” as he calls Yugoslavia. \u0160ehi\u0107 enlisted in the Bosnian army and led a unit of 130 men. The experience has had a profound impact on his literature, which now enjoys cult status in Bosnia and throughout former Yugoslavia. \u0160ehi\u0107 addressed the war in his 2000 debut volume Pjesme u nastajanju (Poems in the Making) and in his first short story collection Pod pritiskom (Under Pressure), published four years later. His 2013 European Literature Prize-winning debut novel Knjiga o Uni (Book about Una) is about post-war trauma and the healing power of nature. \u0160ehi\u0107 worked as a journalist and columnist for BH Dani magazine in Sarajevo. His books have been translated into numerous languages; his most recent German publication is Uhrwerksgeschichten (Mimesis Verlag, 2020; tr: Elvira Veselinovi\u0107).
