Zhou Qing was born in Xian in Shaanxi province in 1964. He is a journalist, non-fiction author and political reporter, as well as a specialist in oral history. In 1989, he was sentenced to two years in prison for participating in the democracy movement. Because he refused to confess and also attempted to escape, his sentence was extended by a further eight months. Zhou Qing is the editor of the magazine Oral Museum and former editor-in-chief of the weekly newspaper Legends & Stories, which is published in China. His book What Kind of God: A Survey of the Current Safety of China’s Food was published in over ten countries, including Germany, Italy and Japan, and became an international bestseller. For this book he received the Lettre Ulysses Award for the Art of Reportage in 2006. In 2007, he received an award from the Australian International Scholar Foundation for the best political reportage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He is a member of the Chinese Society for the Study of Folk Literature and Art and the Independent Chinese PEN Center, from which he received a prize for freedom of writing in 2009. Zhou Qing has dealt with social hotspots in China, for example in his books Crises in the Health Care System, Exile in the Homeland and in a collection of interviews with drug addicts. After a one-year fellowship at the Heinrich B\u00f6ll House, Zhou Qing was a fellow in the Writers-in-Exile Program of the German PEN Center from September 2009 to August 2012. In exile in Munich, he focused primarily on the situation of migrant workers and the death penalty in his home country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
