Liao Yiwu, born in 1958 in Sichuan province, grew up as a child in great poverty. In 1989, he wrote the poem \u2018Massacre\u2019, for which he was imprisoned for four years and severely maltreated. In 2007, Liao Yiwu was awarded the \u2018Freedom to Write\u2019 prize by the Independent Chinese PEN Centre, which was prevented from being awarded at the last minute. In 2009, his book \u2018Miss Hello and the Peasant Emperor\u2019 was published. In 2011, when \u2018For a Song and a Hundred Songs\u2019 was published in Germany, Liao Yiwu managed to leave China.
