He was born in Wetzlar in 1944 and grew up between Wetzlar, Wiesbaden, Bonn and Marseille. He has always been interested in literature and studied German and Slavic studies at the Free University and the Technical University of Berlin. After graduating from university, he worked as an editor for Rowohlt publishing house and co-founded and edited its literary magazine. He later traveled to New York, California and Texas as a guest lecturer and also spent time in South America and West Africa lecturing and doing book tours. He has written many books in which he explores the concept of worldliness but one of his best-known works is, perhaps, a trilogy of novels about Haiti. His most recent works include <em>Elf Arten, das Eis zu brechen<\/em> (2016), <em>Stillleben mit Totenkopf<\/em> (2018) and his chronicle of the German literary scene <em>Tunnel \u00fcber der Spree. Dream Paths of Literature<\/em> (2019). In 2019, he also published a collection of essays entitled <em>Kulturschock China oder: Wie ich die gro\u00dfe Mauer erklommt. Erz\u00e4hlungen und Essays<\/em>, as well as his work <em>N\u00e4chtliche Ger\u00e4usche im Dschungel. Postkoloniale Notizen.<\/em> in 2022. He has been the subject of much critical acclaim and has been awarded numerous prestigious prizes. He was awarded the Officier de l&#8217;Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1984, the Frankfurt Anthology Prize in 2004, the Schubart Literature Prize in 2011 and in 2014 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Bern.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hans Christoph Buch is an essayist, reporter and writer.
