Meral \u015eim\u015fek, born in Diyarbak\u0131r, is a Kurdish author of poems, novels and short stories as well as an editor for various magazines and publishing houses. She has composed music and written song lyrics. In particular, she deals with Kurdish themes, including in her poetry collections \u201cM\u00fclteci D\u00fc\u015fler\u201d (2013, tr: Refugee Dreams), \u201cAte\u015fe Bulut Ya\u011fd\u0131ran\u201d (2015, tr: Clouds in the Fire), and \u201c\u0130ncir Karas\u0131\u201d (2017, tr: Black Fig). She was awarded the Martyr Deniz F\u0131rat Turkish Poetry Prize in 2017 for her first novel, \u201cNar Lekesi\u201d (tr: Pomegranate Spot). In 2018, she was awarded the title of Best Poet at Diyarbak\u0131r’s Golden Earth Awards. Due to an impending prison sentence in Turkey, she was brought into exile in Germany in July 2022 with the help of PEN Berlin. Her story, \u201cArzela\u201d, which was published in the anthology \u201cKurdistan + 100\u201d, reflects her visionary idea of a future for the Kurdish people by 2046. Some of her poems and stories have been translated into German, English and French and published in various newspapers and magazines.
