Vassilis Kontopoulos, born in Thessaloniki in 1962, has lived and worked in Berlin for many years. After studying education in Florina and Thessaloniki, graduating with a degree in 1982, he devoted himself to studying art history at the Free University of Berlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since 1987, he has been a regular contributor to the Greek cultural magazine ODOS PANOS, where his column Hier Berlin (\u0395\u03b4\u03ce \u0392\u03b5\u03c1\u03bf\u03bb\u03af\u03bd\u03bf) has been chronicling the life, culture, and people of the German capital for over five decades. In addition to reports and essays, he has also published short stories, poems, and interviews. His topics range from visual arts to cinema, music, and theater\u2014always with a keen eye for the connection between culture and contemporary history. He has also worked as a correspondent for several magazines, including MAX, POP & ROCK, SONIK, and SOUL, as well as for the daily newspapers Eleftherotypia and Thessaloniki.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
His literary and journalistic work includes numerous books: from Briefe aus Berlin (Letters from Berlin, 1995), an anthology of his own texts from the period of reunification, to highly acclaimed biographies and translations on artists such as David Bowie, Joni Mitchell, Radiohead, Placebo, the Scorpions, Metallica, and Alain Delon. In his work, he repeatedly builds bridges between music, film, and literature, revealing the poetic and social dimensions of popular culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Kontopoulos also works as a translator: among other things, he has translated works by Hans-Christian Huf and Philipp Vandenberg from German into Greek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In 1995, he received a working scholarship for Berlin authors. In 2021, he presented his project Das Lied ging um die Welt \/ The Song Went Round the World in book form and as an exhibition at the Mitte Museum Berlin, as well as in Krakow am See, G\u00f6rlitz, and Potsdam.
