As the year draws to a close, our multilingual reading series PARATAXE – Berlin’s international literary scenes<\/em> has now been running for eight years and our stadtsprachen magazin<\/em>, whose 30th issue is due in December 2024, has been around for just as long. On November 13, we demonstrated together with thousands of Berlin artists in front of the Brandenburg Gate against the cuts in the cultural sector announced by the Berlin Senate. And which now threaten the very existence of our work in the future – because as a non-regularly funded, non-profit and basically non-commercial association without any basic budget, every cut means not only an inability to act in terms of content (no events and projects), but also the loss of structural working bases (rent, technology, etc.). If we are no longer allowed to afford the rent, our work will not be impaired, but ended. Like so many artistic projects in this city, our work is largely based on voluntary commitment and self-exploitation in the service of a cause that is generally recognized as useful for the common good – why do we want and need to cut back on this of all things, we ask the politicians. If you are neither regularly funded nor allowed to have any reserves, every cut is a dangerous cut in the supporting substance – how a cultural senator can come up with the idea that 10% less would be feasible under these circumstances is a mystery to us – actually, only someone who neither knows nor appreciates our situation and our work can think like that. Berlin does not live from large industries or businesses, Berlin lives first and foremost from its reputation – and Berlin is culture. If this city cuts back on its culture, it will be just only poor and nothing more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the coming year 2025, the Berliner Literarische Aktion will have tirelessly been active in the heart of the city’s literary life for twenty years now – and we hope that this will be a particularly lively year. In dark times we should shine, so let’s shine a light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
