9+1 years of PARATAXE, 9+1 years of multilingualism in Berlin literature<\/p>\n\n\n\n
When the stadtsprachen festival laid the foundation in 2016, the idea was as simple as it was radical: to make Berlin’s literary voices visible in all their languages, not only as translations into German, but as equal forms of expression in a polyphonic and multilingual city. This idea gave rise to PARATAXE, an ongoing network and event format that creates encounters between authors, translators, and readers.
Today, almost a decade later, Berlin’s multilingual literary scene is no longer just an experiment, but an integral part of contemporary literature. With the 33rd issue of stadtsprachen magazine, we celebrate this anniversary and present a snapshot of this vibrant, ever-changing scene. Twenty-four texts by 32 authors and translators in nine languages\u2014Greek, English, Russian, French, Vietnamese, Italian, German, Danish, and Spanish\u2014form a mosaic of the voices, languages, and perspectives that are at home in Berlin.
Developments in recent years show that multilingualism in literature is no longer a marginal phenomenon, but rather a central aesthetic, cultural, and political practice. It opens up spaces in which belonging, memory, and identity are renegotiated, not as fixed categories, but as fluid, dialogical processes. Authors write in multiple languages, switching styles and cultural contexts, thus creating texts that defy a single national or linguistic location. Berlin is a special place for this: a polyphonic laboratory where languages meet, mix, and change each other.
This issue invites you to travel through the literary landscapes of this city: across linguistic boundaries, through intimate, political, and poetic spaces. It is both a retrospective and a preview: an echo of nine years of collaborative work and a promise for the years to come.
