Berlin rarely speaks in only one voice. Berlin speaks and lives in many voices, in courtyards, in-between subway doors and in crowded marketplaces. Perhaps that is exactly the reason, why Berlin is often thought of as the capital of world literature: not only because if its sights and monuments, not because of Berlin\u2019s marketing campaigns, but because of its many and various voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 34rd edition of our stadtsprachen magazin is being released in a time during which the cultural landscape of Berlin exists under immense pressure. Debates around funding cuts, uncertainties about public spaces, precarious conditions for artist and cultural initiatives dominate the current time. Many ask themselves, what remains, when financial means are disappearing and doors have to close. The answer, perhaps, lies where literature has always been created: in its refusal to remain silent! For months, Berlin\u2019s cultural institutions and initiatives have been protesting against budget cuts and warning of the consequences for diversity and cultural participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After all, Berlin has never been just a city of major venues. Berlin is a city of small magazines, improvised stages, living-room readings, and texts that come into being despite a lack of time and money. It is precisely in these spaces that what later comes to be seen as indispensable often takes root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This latest issue of our stadtsprachen magazine brings together 25 authors, 10 translators, and texts in 19 languages: Arabic, Bengali, German, English, Faroese, Finnish, French, Galician, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Luxembourgish, Nepali, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Turkish, Ukrainian, and Vietnamese. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
If Berlin is indeed the capital of world literature, it is not because all languages are heard equally here, but because every day people have to fight to ensure that they are heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 34th edition is therefore more than just a collection of texts. It is proof that diversity works, writes, translates, and endures\u2014and that even in times of austerity, something grows that cannot be cut back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
