We live in a time when boundaries of all kinds are becoming more visible again: political, social, linguistic, and cultural. Conflicts are on the rise worldwide, democratic values are under pressure, and public debates often narrow down to simplistic answers. At the same time, it has never been easier to retreat into one\u2019s own information bubbles and read, hear, and see only what confirms one\u2019s own point of view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Literature offers an alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It invites us to view the world from a different perspective. It creates space for experiences that are foreign to us and reminds us that behind every language, every biography, and every story stands a person with their own unique and individual story. Multilingual literature, in particular, opens up avenues that extend beyond national and cultural boundaries. And it is precisely these voices that reveal how differently people describe their reality\u2014and yet how much they still have in common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The 35th issue of our stadtsprachen magazine brings together prose, poetry, essays, and drama in twelve languages. The texts take readers on a journey through memories and the present, through personal experiences and social observations. They tell of closeness and distance, of loss and hope, of origin, change, and belonging. Some texts pose questions; others offer no answers. That is precisely where their strength lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The fact that we can read these voices together is due in no small part to our translators. Translation is far more than the transfer of words. It creates connections. It makes literature accessible and facilitates encounters between people who might otherwise never meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
