two children waken\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0say they\u2019re mine<\/p>\n

like a thief I try to pocket<\/p>\n

my apocalypse scenes<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

the children want the world<\/p>\n

and I assure them they can have it<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I just have to find my sunglasses<\/p>\n

can\u2019t see the planet anymore without them<\/p>\n

but someone has sat \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0on my only pair<\/p>\n

the children say it was me<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and why wouldn\u2019t it be<\/p>\n

irony is not enough\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0naked-eyed<\/p>\n

I lead them out into the brightness<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3:14pm<\/strong><\/p>\n

we reach a green<\/p>\n

a place to mock-race\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 over fake grass<\/p>\n

forget the hem of fences<\/p>\n

till it stops us<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

in a stream once<\/p>\n

I pressed on wet leaves<\/p>\n

my foot sunk into a dead deer underneath<\/p>\n

no way to know<\/p>\n

till my foot was in its ribs<\/p>\n

how the hidden would get hold of me<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4:03<\/strong><\/p>\n

I find a tree\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 cower beneath it<\/p>\n

consider how much of the lonely<\/p>\n

I lived along that creek was meanness<\/p>\n

people spitting tobacco<\/p>\n

into library books\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 setting fire<\/p>\n

to the gas-soaked nest of a bird<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

we drove past the forest more<\/p>\n

than we entered it \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0hoping against<\/p>\n

the dart of an animal\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0large at the curve<\/p>\n

people crashed that way\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0a bear emerging<\/p>\n

ravenous after the snow<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

7:10pm<\/strong><\/p>\n

I surrender\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0declare the sun irrelevant<\/p>\n

pull the shades against it<\/p>\n

let the tub run till it warms<\/p>\n

while someone else\u2019s child stares thirsty at a dirty cup<\/p>\n

while the lakes\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 while I align<\/p>\n

all these inanimate eyes<\/p>\n

touch the plush arms of a stuffed cat as if<\/p>\n

it were holy<\/p>\n

this goat and Paddington \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0without which<\/p>\n

my most beloveds do not know<\/p>\n

how to sleep<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

7:41pm<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before the reckoning I suck in<\/p>\n

some Twitter\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 more conditioned air<\/p>\n

then descend to them\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0re-enter the heat<\/p>\n

and they are there\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 writhing<\/p>\n

the blind gods of the compost bin<\/p>\n

who multiply so divinely<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

and who I have dreamed of<\/p>\n

wriggling inside me\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0worming<\/p>\n

their acropolis into my softer parts<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

as they unmake me\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I awaken<\/p>\n

my hands still cupping the sandy raisins<\/p>\n

I came to offer\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0in whose particles<\/p>\n
