\nwhile others can\u2019t be out of there too fast.<\/p>\n
Oddly, it seems to be the first
\nwhose gadgets have them quite immersed:<\/p>\n
they\u2019re registered on every site
\nthat keeps them up at night.<\/p>\n

though they\u2019re the tribe that roams

The Birch Window at Night<\/p>\n
At two a.m. my fingers part
\nthe frames to clear three hours of farts.
\nMid-August: the midnight coldness starts.<\/p>\n
Here\u2019s never silent. Traffic off.
\nAnd down the road I hear the cough
\nof some pale clubward-wandering Goth.<\/p>\n
Sharp lamplight runs full body searches
\nacross the cars. The full moon perches
\natop the shiftily looming birches.<\/p>\n
Then something starts to buzz about.
\nI shut the window, still in doubt
\nas to whether that buzz is in or out.<\/p>\n

Berlin, I\u2019ve read, is the city where
\nnobody\u2019s up before midday.
\nAnd the feckless fox, it\u2019s true, will stay
\nsnuggled till dusk inside its lair.<\/p>\n
The squirrels though are at the park,
\nridding the paths of unsightly nuts
\namid the blossom of cigarette butts,
\nas radios chirp at the fading dark.<\/p>\n
And the pigeons have their shit to do,
\nbut the autoscrubber\u2019s warm
\nas the all-night animal scans the platform,
\nstumbles home and then sleeps through
