In conversation with Lưu Bích Ngọc, Veronika Radulovic shared her experiences of studying lacquer painting during her time in Hanoi. This brief report of the event was authored by Lưu Bích Ngọc, a cultural worker presently based in both Berlin and Hanoi.

Veronika Radulovic first came to Hanoi in the early 1990s to study Vietnamese lacquer art. She was the first German lecturer at the Hanoi University of Fine Arts (École des Beaux Arts d’Indochine) from 1994 to 2005. In 1993, she created the “Über den Anfang” series, inspired by the real Red River (sông Hồng) in Hanoi, including 24 lacquer paintings measuring 24 x 35 cm each. Facing the language barrier of not knowing Vietnamese language, Veronika was instructed by a deaf and dumb girl to learn lacquer, making the experience unforgettable for her.

The history of Vietnamese lacquer, known as sơn mài (or sơn ta) and derived from a native tree resin in Phu Tho, was recounted. Outside of Vietnam, lacquer also exists in other countries, such as Japan, China, or Myanmar. Traditionally, Vietnamese people used lacquer primarily as a craft to protect wooden objects from the tropical climate due to its waterproofing quality and for aesthetic appeal. From the beginning of 1920s, with the French colonial period in Vietnam, a transformation of the lacquer medium took place at L’Ecole des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine. Vietnamese students were encouraged to explore lacquer as panel painting and a fine art medium.

When Veronika created the series, she followed the same principles: painting on black-primed wooden panels using natural color pigments, ground eggshells and silver leaves. These panels were then coated layer by layer with lacquer, each layer subsequently sanded and polished. Each layer needs high humidity to dry, either from the weather or it must be placed in a humid room to dry. The sanding process emphasizes the layered character of the lacquer. By sanding out the underlying layers, a seemingly endless number of different effects could be achieved.

This process was undeniably time-consuming; a lacquer painting could take several months or even years to complete. For Veronika, this aspect resonated with her observations during her time in Hanoi: the colors kept changing, reflecting what she considered to be distinctly ‘Vietnamese’—the adaptability of the people and their mindset. Also, she frequently found herself waiting in uncertainty for permission to exhibit – a common situation when dealing with the government and the censorship; especially because she was planning a collaborative exhibition with Vietnamese lacquer artists, which was a novelty at that time.

Veronika revealed an interesting anecdote: during a visit by representatives from the Ministry of Culture prior to her series’ exhibition, they asked her several questions, particularly focusing on the intent behind the two accompanying sentences: “If you could speak, who would you speak to?” and “If you could walk on water, where would you go?”. These questions, for Veronika, rendered her situation at that time – a period when contacts between local citizens and foreigners were always under scrutiny, plus the strict laws regarding inspections and applying for permission in the art scene. Fortunately, they allowed her to proceed with the exhibition after she presented an alternative interpretation of the series and the questions—offering a familiar Catholic story of Jesus Christ walking on water. This detail fascinated everyone who attended the studio visit event. River and water hold diverse meanings for Veronika, especially as she discovered the many meanings of the word “nước” (water) in Vietnamese language. “Nước” means water, but also signifies land/ country (đất nước), patriotic (yêu nước), among many others. Water not only shapes the landscape of Vietnam, it also embodies the symbolic richness of the country’ myths and legends. According to Dr. Niko Ewers, Veronika Radulovic’s series reflects a Vietnam-in-motion after the Doi Moi (Renovation Policy) and Vietnam’s opening to the global world. Later on, in 2004, Veronika conducted a curatorial project titled “Giving Water an Image” (Tạo hình cho nước) with artists and art students from the Hanoi University of Fine Arts, further thinking on this word “nước”.

A topic that we unfortunately did not have enough time to discuss is cultural appropriation. As a German artist and art-mediator, even though this series paid homage to lacquer painting, a distinctly Vietnamese art form, it has a different visual language that allows the motifs to “appear in a different light, a different horizon”. Traditionally, Vietnamese lacquer paintings are accompanied by romanticized depictions of local landscapes, pagodas, and village culture etc., symbolizing a love for the homeland and a vision of national identity. Veronika’s perspective, as an outsider, differed in approach: she ventured into lacquer in a more experimental manner, particularly embracing conceptual elements like combining words in the series.

In our conversation before the studio visit, we also mentioned different lacquer artists. We pondered why there seems to be limited interest among young artists in Vietnam in using this material, or why there are just a few contemporary lacquer artists. Reflecting on the “Über den Anfang” series, we saw it not merely as an outcome of the artistic process, but also a crystallization of the period Veronika lived in Vietnam. Lacquer painting still embodies Vietnamese national identity, even after 30 years (1993-2023), in a quite exclusive, conservative, and politically-corrected manner.

However, there are artists like Công Kim Hoa, known for abstract and semi-abstract lacquer pieces; Khai Doan, a German – Vietnamese artist, whose paintings combine tradition with the fast-paced world of advertising; and Phi Phi Oanh, also a Viet-diasporic artist, advocating for a reconsideration of lacquer in a digital world, beyond its traditional status as a Vietnamese art form. We hope for a young generation of artists to renew lacquer, both in terms of theme and technique – while bearing in mind its high cost and its history of exclusivity.

Birgit Hussfeld: Küchenschabenflügelbraun – vietnamesische Lackkunst.
